After years of war with virtually no prospect of a solution, millions of children and youth risk becoming a 'lost generation', a generation of young people growing up with mental and physical scars, with no future prospects due to lack of education. About 13 million children in the region do not attend school and another nine million are at risk of dropping out of education.
Schools and universities in Arab host countries are barely able to accommodate the thousands of additional children and young people in need of education. If young people are not given the opportunity to go to school and develop, who will soon have to rebuild their countries when war or conflict are over?
Television can play an important role in conveying information and education when people are cut off from regular education. That is why Arab Vision, together with broadcast partner Sat-7, has produced an educational programme via television and online. This basic literacy programme is aimed at children aged about six to eight years old.
In each episode, we learn three words and show the same letter in three different positions in the word: at the beginning, in the middle and at the end. (The shape of the letter often changes in Arabic script).
After a short intro, a child draws something related to the main word of the episode and a short interview is held with children talking about that word. If the word is e.g. 'home', they talk about what it is like to have a home and what it means to be a refugee and not have your own home.
After the interview, the child completes the picture and writes down the word, pronouncing each letter and the whole word. He then writes two more words with the same letter.
The series consists of 28 clips on the letters of the alphabet and 22 on different shapes, colours and concepts.
