Life is not a fairy tale. It certainly is not for women in the Arab world. Over the past 28 years, Arab Vision has produced many TV programmes to encourage and support Arab women and stand up for their rights. We are now producing a drama series: Cinderella. The programmes are in the final stages of editing. Subtitled episodes will soon be available on our YouTube channel.
Cinderella rebels against her traditional life and aspires to become a strong and independent woman. She shares this with the good fairy and together they travel to Egypt. There, Cinderella lives with other women in a shared flat. Cinderella experiences the same challenges and daily realities that women in the Arab world face.
The series discusses 15 crucial themes relevant to the lives of many Arab women. Some of these include: society's rejection of female leadership, the mother's role in gender equality at home, social pressure on Arab women to marry, sexual harassment and its consequences, is an Arab woman the property of her husband?
By portraying the themes in a creative and unique way, we make m/f roles, societal expectations and the challenges Arab women face discussable. A mix of drama, open conversation and public opinion engages the viewer and provokes valuable discussion. Each topic delves deeply into everyday experiences. It challenges viewers to reflect on the changing role of Arab women and encourages an environment of change.
