Missiology for Arabs

Arab Vision is the owner of a webzine for missiological thinking in the Arab World, called St Francis Magazine.  You may want to go there regularly for the great articles that we publish.  This magazine is a project that we share with Interserve.

The United Nations: Islam’s Gestapo?

On 28 March the UN’s Human Rights Council (UNHRC) passed a resolution that tells the body’s expert on free speech to report on ‘individuals and news media for negative comments on Islam’. Unbelievable!  Shame on this ‘Human Rights’ Council. The Human Right Council becomes an instrument for censorship?

No other religion is covered by the Muslim-backed resolution. Why only Islam? Muslim discrimination against Christians in Islamic countries has been very well documented. For example, in Pakistan and Egypt, the two countries that proposed the anti-free speech motion, Christians are second-rate citizens.  Muslims who want to leave their faith can go to jail.  The mosques in the Arab World shout insults at the Christian faith from the Minarets each day.

Look at the insults hurled at Christianity by Muslims, Hindus, Jews, pagans, and any tribe in this world.  Does that not need monitoring?  Actually, no.  Let people say what they like.  I love that freedom.

Egypt and Pakistan motioned the resolution.  Truly bulwarks of democracy and human rights, not?  Supported by Islamic and African countries, the resolution passed by a 32-0 vote.  European countries withheld their votes – afraid, my brothers?  This looks ugly. Very ugly.  Since when do we not dare to open our mouth?

Stephen Brown wrote this week on Frontpage Magazine:

By abstaining, the European nations, those supposed bastions of human rights and free speech (especially when it comes to blaspheming Christianity), simply showed what moral cowards they truly are, putting their dhimmi status on display once more in failing to stand up to Islamic bullying.

Well, this talk about Europe’s dhimmitude usually upsets me as rather naïve. But now, look at this.  No-one dared to open its mouth?  Afraid of boycotts? I love Holland! I love Denmark! Celebrate the freedom to say what you like.  Print cartoons, make films against Islam.  The more the merrier.  This great society we live in, with freedom of speech, must be upheld.  The USA and Europe, natural allies, must stand up against any small symbol of backwardness like this resolution.

Will this resolution give repressive regimes, both Islamic and non-Islamic, a further excuse to crack down on dissent in their own countries? Will it give such states an opportunity to meddle in the affairs of democratic countries, using a phony ‘victim status’ as cover for their aggression?  Oh those Muslims with their victim-complexes. Islam is a religion that must be stopped, not helped.
You read this UNHRC? Am I on the list now?

Prayer

We thank the Lord of the Church that the Egyptian Court has agreed that the Church cannot be forced by Egypt's government to act against its own principles.  Pray that the Churches of the Arab World continue to be able to function with government interference.
